Huge Increase in Cleg Numbers
The long hot summer has been great for outdoor activities but the dry sunny weather has also provided ideal conditions for some insects. In particular this year has seen a huge increase in cleg numbers in the Scottish countryside. Also known as horseflies, they can inflict a painful bite and walkers are experiencing swarms of them as far afield as Galloway and Sutherland. It is the female cleg that bites, sucking blood for the protein it contains. They need this to help them produce eggs. Although they can bite through thin clothing, leaving as little skin as possible exposed helps as does using reliable insect repellents such as Smidge or DEET.
