Scottish Mountain Hare Concerns
A coalition of environmental organisations have called for a halt to the culling of Mountain Hares in Scotland. They fear that the culls, which are currently a legal part of moorland management, are having such a detrimental effect on the Mountain Hare population that the mammals may face extinction in localised areas. The Scottish Government will now study the new evidence and consider whether further conservation measures are necessary. For more details, see this report from Mountaineering Scotland. In Scotland Mountain Hares turn white in winter and are a native species to the Highlands, unlike their Brown counterparts which are thought to have been introduced to mainland Britain 2000 years ago.
