Third Hatching for Midges
Due to the unusual Scottish weather we’ve been having this summer, it’s been confirmed that there is now a third hatching of midges. This year the cold spring ensured a slow start to the midge season and the prolonged hot spell further kept their numbers down, however the resilient insects soon recovered once the weather became more favourable and the extra hatching will boost the population. The tiny biting flies typically hatch twice each year (in May and July) but a third hatching could become commonplace should temperatures continue to rise. Despite this influx of midges from the third generation, the onslaught of autumn and colder temperatures should ensure they won’t be around for much longer.
